Keto Beef and Butter Fast: test results and recipes

I tried the Keto Beef and Butter Fast. That’s right. Only beef and butter for 4 days! I only lost weight the first 3 days, so I am going to stick with a 3 day review.

First of all, I love the keto diet, but wasn’t quite ready to try Beef and Butter.

I gained a lot of weight pregnant with my 3rd child (he was 11 1/2 pounds). And I was not able to get it off for the life of me! all the diets that worked with my other kiddos, didn’t make a dent this time around.

He was almost 2 when I decided to take the plunge on the keto diet. And I lost 20 pounds in the first 2 months, eating basically cheesecake, so when I want to lose weight, I know that for my body, I must turn to low carb options.

I had heard about the Beef and Butter challenge when I was researching keto at the beginning , but I thought that there was no way I was going to do that to my body!

I did try the keto egg fast about a year ago, it taught me how to eat keto more cheaply; when I accepted that I could eat eggs for dinner if I didn’t have other fancy options. And it opened up an easy way to lose weight after a splurge.

I am pretty close to my ideal weight now. Enough so, that I fit comfortably in all of my clothes, and I splurge a little more often. This gets me in trouble because I can’t lose the last 15 pounds. I stay low carb during the week, lose 3-4 pounds, then I play with my kids and hubby which usually means splurging on food, and I gain 3-4 pounds back.

A Beef and Butter post resurfaced in my pinterest page a week ago, and I was now willing to give it a try.

First I cooked an 8 lbs package of ground beef, then separated it into 12 bags (check out the awesome reusable bags) and then tossed them all into the freezer. (I cooked them on Friday and wasn’t going to start till Monday).

This was really nice because at every meal, I just grabbed a bag, emptied it into a glass bowl, threw 2-3 tablespoons of butter on it, and the spices of choice, and microwaved it for 2-3 minutes. I love how easy it was and there was no guess work on what to eat!

The first day I used taco seasoning for the meat (seasoning recipe here)

It was great, and I would have stuck to just that the whole time, but knowing I was going to be writing this, I thought I’d better try a variety of recipes.

So the next day I tried this ‘bbq’ flavor. I didn’t think it tasted like bbq, but it was flavorful and I ate it 3 times with no problems.

By that time I saw a pattern that if I put 3-4 Tablespoons of a combination of any kinds of spices, that the flavor would be strong enough to make it feel like I wasn’t eating just ground beef.

So the third day I made up my own version. I had just gone to a Thai Food Restaurant where I adore their basil dishes, so I tried to make a Thai ground beef.

  • 1 T. dried Basil
  • 1 T. Ginger
  • 1 T. Garlic
  • salt and pepper to taste.

And you know what? it tasted pretty decent! Which is about as much as I can hope for.

The next day I tried out a few other flavor combinations that aren’t worth recommending, my last experiment was so salty I almost didn’t get it down!

At the end of the 4 days, I lost 5 1/2 pounds!

Not bad. I’m pretty pleased with it. It means I am 2 pounds lower than my average low. So it is a step in the right direction. And I have committed to my husband to absolutely not splurge for at least 3 weeks. (I would have done more, but then it’s his birthday).

The great thing about the keto diet, is that I can realistically expects to lose an extra 5-10 pounds in the next 2 1/2 weeks, and can hopefully be exactly where I want!

Update: I have had a couple of impromptu beef and butter days. I made a roast one day, and just heated up the extras with a couple of pats of butter throughout the next day. I loved it!

My hubby also made these awesome steaks slathered in butter. This beef and butter fast can be really delicious!

My biggest suggestions:

  • Don’t start out with the Beef and Butter challenge if you have never done keto. Keto is effective on its own, and the beef challenge is for those who are well keto-adapted, and are looking for a boost with their weight loss.   • Keep up with your electrolytes and water! salt, potassium, magnesium, and calcium.
  • Take an extra digestive enzyme. For me, eating red meat too many days in a row, gives me indigestion. Cholacol is what I use, and it is very effective. I took one with each meal.
