Keto and exercise might not seem like they can go together, especially if you are just starting out. But actually, it can be a dynamite combination that can lead to muscle gain and fat loss.
My Experience With Working Out On Keto
I had a funny conversation with one of my sisters. When she would get frustrated with weight gain, she would turn to an exercise regimen, and when I would get frustrated, I would turn to a diet regimen.
Both of us never hit our fat loss goals doing this. “Maybe we should take each other’s advice, and combine the two!”
Which of course is the best answer. Eating healthy is always a good choice, and moving more has no disadvantages.
I had a goal. My husband’s company was going to Cancun for a week. And you can bet that I had the focus and motivation to look as best as I could for that vacation.
I combined keto (only carb feasted 3 times) and daily exercise (5x a week at the gym) for 4 solid months.
I lost some weight and then stalled for a while, but I kept losing inches and was really happy with my results.
So here are some things I learned, and some great exercise ideas, to do while on keto.
Why Exercise is Important for Health and Weight Loss
Exercise is important for overall health, but it can be especially beneficial when following a keto diet. Understanding the benefits of exercise on a keto diet and how to start an exercise program can help those who are new to the ketogenic lifestyle make the most of it.
Exercise has many benefits that extend beyond just weight loss; it helps reduce the risk of chronic diseases, boosts your mood and energy levels, strengthens bones and muscles, improves mental health, and even helps you sleep better.
All these things together contribute to optimal health.
Moreover, working out regularly helps burn off any extra calories you may have consumed throughout the day. This helps prevent weight gain and can even lead to fat loss if done consistently over time.
Benefits of Exercise on a Keto Diet
The keto diet itself is an effective tool for weight loss as well as improving overall health. Combining a healthy eating plan with regular physical activity can help speed up results even further.
Exercise also helps decrease hunger cravings by releasing endorphins into the body which help increase feelings of joy or euphoria; this in turn helps people stay focused on their goals without succumbing to unhealthy cravings.
Additionally, exercise increases blood flow throughout the body which offers additional benefits like improved digestion or easier elimination of waste products from cells. It also increases energy levels which makes it easier to stick with your workout routine long-term!
How To Have A Cardio Workout While on the Ketogenic Diet
Cardiovascular exercises, such as running, biking, or swimming, are great ways to get in some physical activity while on the keto diet.
You can start off with something simple like taking a walk around your neighborhood for 30 minutes each day and gradually increasing your intensity level over time.
If you don’t like to go outside to do a good cardio. I found that ‘stepping’ is a cheap and awesome thing to do while mindlessly watching tv.
Pros of Weight Lifting While on the Keto Diet:
Not only is cardio great, but of course, lifting weight and gaining muscles have so many benefits that should not be ignored.
- Weight lifting can help you build muscle and increase endurance, while also burning calories and fat. This type of exercise supports fat loss goals while providing a host of other physical benefits.
- Weight lifting can give your metabolism a boost and help you achieve a healthy body weight.
- Weight lifting helps to improve body composition and tone the muscles, which can give one a more defined look.
- Increased muscle mass also gives you improved posture, balance, and coordination.
- Strength training can help reduce joint pain as well as prevent injuries such as back pain or slipped discs.
- Regular weight lifting can help to reduce stress, improve sleep quality and increase energy levels.
exercise is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle and the keto diet is no exception. Whether you are just getting started with your fitness journey or are already well on your way to achieving your goals, incorporating some type of exercise into your routine can provide just what you need to finally achieve your ideal health.
What To Workout To Start With On Keto
The hard thing about workout and the ketogenic diet, is that at the beginning, before you are truly into being fat-adapted, you may feel overly tired and lack energy. You may even have symptoms of the dreaded “keto flu” (which you don’t need to have if you follow my suggestions here).
So just like starting out on any workout routine, I started small, with low intensity exercises, and work my way to harder and longer exercises when my body is ready.
1. Best Low Intensity, Steady State Exercises.
The fun thing about burning calories is, that most calories burned during the day, are just by regular movement.
Try Fidgeting – bouncing your knees, tapping your toes, walking in a circle while on the phone. . . these things actually aid with losing weight, and can be done without any problem on a very low-carb diet. (want other tips, check these out.)
What are the best moderate-intensity exercises you can do on a ketogenic diet?
Moderate-intensity exercise is great for those who are well into the ketogenic diet, as they provide an effective balance between fat-burning and maintaining muscle mass.
Moderate-intensity exercises include jogging, stair climbing, swimming, cycling, and rowing. These can help increase your metabolism while also burning a moderate amount of calories. Additionally, these exercises won’t cause too much of a disruption to your ketogenic diet, as they won’t yield the large insulin response found in high-intensity workouts
. Overall, moderate-intensity exercises are great for improving cardiovascular health and supporting a healthy weight loss journey.
I am a fan of jumping on a trampoline. It gets your heart-rate up, builds some muscle, and isn’t too strenuous. This is my favorite trampoline here.
What are the best high-intensity workouts you can do on a ketogenic diet?
High-intensity workouts are great for those masters of a ketogenic diet who are ready to move to the next level. They have their energy back, and want to burn fat quickly and effectively.
High-intensity workouts such as HIIT (high-intensity interval training) or Tabata can help increase your metabolism, allowing you to burn more calories in less time.
With shorter bursts of intense activity followed by rest periods, this High-Intensity Exercise post lets you try a quick, new workout every day for 2 weeks.
This helps me when I am working out on keto, because it is effective, without being an endurance exercise.
Most of these videos involves one minute of moderate-intensity workouts, followed by 30 seconds of intense bursts which have been shown to help people lose weight and gain muscle cells quickly. (High Intensity Exercise Training Videos)

Try this anaerobic exercise
The main difference between aerobic and anaerobic exercise is that aerobic exercise involves long, continuous periods of rhythmic movements and uses oxygen to generate energy, while anaerobic exercise is short bursts of intense activity relying on stored energy for fuel. Aerobic exercises require more oxygen intake and burn a higher percentage of fat than carbohydrates during the activity. Anaerobic exercises involve quick movement with a lot of force, burning mainly carbohydrates as the primary energy source. Both types of exercise are important in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
Anaerobic exercise is great for those following a ketogenic diet as it can help build lean muscle and increase physical performance in short bursts. Common anaerobic exercises are weight lifting, sprinting, and bodyweight exercises such as push-ups, pull-ups, squats, and burpees. These exercises require less oxygen to perform than aerobic exercises and involve

What I like to do for aerobic exercise along with my targeted ketogenic diet, is follow along with these youtube videos at home. They use body weight to build physical performance, and of course, the health benefits of aerobic exercises are immense. This is a great way to increase physical performance and build lean muscle mass without having to go to the gym or buy any fancy equipment.
Common Questions About Exercise and the Keto Diet
Here are some other common questions I get a lot about working out while on the ketogenic diet.
How much protein consumption do you need while working out?
The amount of protein needed to gain muscle depends on a variety of factors such as your weight, activity level, food intake, and goals.
Generally speaking, it is recommended that those looking to build muscle consume 1-2 grams of protein per pound of body weight each day.
If you are weight training regularly, consider increasing this amount for optimal results.
Keeping your protein intake high helps you maintain an anabolic state which encourages muscle growth. Additionally, be sure to include quality sources of fats for energy and overall health benefits.
Eating enough protein along with strength training will help ensure you’re able to maximize the gains from each workout session.
Try this Pre Workout Supplement that can help your fat burning working out on keto, and muscle gain, and is perfect for your keto journey.
Extra protein intake is great for high-intensity interval training,
Extra protein intake is great for high-intensity interval training because it helps sustain energy throughout your workout. This is especially important when you’re trying to promote a fat-burning environment, as opposed to just burning carbohydrates for fuel.
A pre-workout supplement with branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) can help keep your body in an anabolic state and aid in muscle recovery during and after your workout. This is especially important when you’re on a ketogenic diet and trying to build muscle and strength.
BCAAs also help to reduce fatigue during exercise. Additionally, adding an electrolyte-based supplement can help provide the hydration and energy needed to complete high-intensity workouts in a healthy way.
How to Start Exercising on a Keto Diet
When starting a new exercise program while following a keto diet, it’s important to wait several weeks before beginning your workouts so that your body is properly adapted to burning fat for fuel instead of carbohydrates (this process is known as ‘ketosis’).
Once you feel ready to start working out, begin slowly with low-intensity exercises like walking or light jogging; gradually increase intensity over time until you reach your desired level of fitness or performance goals. Remember that consistency is key – if you want to see results from your workouts then make sure you stick with them!
Exercise can introduce a wide range of new variables and physical stressors that the body must adjust to while already undergoing other metabolic changes.
Allowing the body time to adapt to those changes slowly over a period of several weeks will help ensure your body is fully prepared to undertake an exercise plan that suits your specific activity level.
So don’t jump into exercise before giving yourself time to adjust to the keto diet changes – wait at least several weeks before hitting the gym!
Exercising on a keto diet can be intimidating, especially if you’re not a seasoned fitness enthusiast. But fear not!
The best approach is to start slowly and then work up to more intense workouts over time. This is the most effective way to get the results you want in the safest way possible. As with any fitness routine, make sure to take breaks frequently, stay hydrated, and listen to your body. With consistency and patience, you’ll be surprised at what your body can achieve!
Can You Have More Carbs if You Exercise?
Yes – although there is no “magic number” when it comes to carbs on the keto diet, some individuals may find that they are able to add more carbs into their diets while still remaining in ketosis if they are exercising regularly.
Muscles use up more carbs during the day. So more muscles = More carbs you can have without going over.
However, this should only be done after careful consideration and should not be used as an excuse to overindulge in carbs!
Trying to figure out how exercise and the keto diet fit together can be confusing. You may be wondering, “Can I have more carbs if I exercise?” The answer is yes—certain types of strenuous exercise can call for an increase in the amount of carbohydrates you consume.
Exercise can also speed up ketosis and help initiate both weight loss and muscle building on a keto diet. But it’s important to keep your overall health goals in mind when increasing your carb intake through exercise, so be sure to consult with your doctor or nutritionist for advice about how to modify your diet accordingly.
Does Exercising Speed Up Ketosis?
Yes – since exercise increases blood flow throughout the body (which carries oxygen), this means that more oxygenated blood will reach cells faster which can speed up metabolic processes like entering ketosis quicker than normal; however this does not mean that you should stop following other dietary guidelines such as limiting net carbs per day or avoiding processed foods completely!
Will Exercising Speed Up Weight Loss?
Yes – regular physical activity combined with healthy eating habits will lead to faster weight loss than either one alone; however keep in mind that there are other factors at play such as hormones or genetics so don’t get discouraged if progress seems slow at first!
Can You Build Muscle on a Keto Diet?
Yes – although building muscle requires both strength training exercises and adequate protein intake (which may be harder on a low-carb/high-fat diet), it is possible with some planning and dedication!
Try supplementing meals with high-quality protein sources like grass-fed beef or wild-caught fish alongside plenty of leafy green vegetables for vitamins/minerals/fiber necessary for maintaining good nutrition levels while following any type of restricted eating plan including the ketogenic diet!
Incorporating exercise into your wellness routine while following a ketogenic lifestyle can bring about many positive changes including increased energy levels, improved moods, better sleep quality, faster metabolism rate (which leads to faster weight loss) plus better overall health due to increased circulation & nutrient delivery throughout cells & organs!
Make sure you wait several weeks after beginning your new dietary plan before starting any new workout routines & be sure not to forget about adequate rest & recovery times between sessions too; all these things taken together will help ensure success no matter what type of lifestyle change you’re trying to achieve!
With proper planning and dedication, anyone can reap all the rewards associated with both following a nutritious eating plan and incorporating regular physical activity into their daily lives so why not give it go today!?
